EN: A place could be defined as a delimited area of space, which implies being marked by a boundary. An inside and an outside. In this way the city is a chain of places, boundaries that overlap and blend.
Almost three centuries ago, in 1748, Giovan Battista Nolli, printed one of the most beautiful engravings of the city of Rome or rather more accurately, the only engraving. At first glance it looks like any map, but, on close observation, it offers the eye one of the most disturbing lucid analyses of the city as it is today. In the work were represented with great precision not only the buildings, but most of all the spaces of the city at the time. Streets and squares, courtyards, gardens and even the numerous plans of the churches represented discontinuously the boundless area where life took place.
Well, it would be so in a utopic universe.
Actually, one becomes aware how many places have disconnected from the chain becoming independent places out of time and space. They have become forgotten and no longer reflect contemporary life, having been excluded. They have become the object of spare time, superfluous unlived-in spaces, to which one is indifferent and are perceived in a distracted fashion, also often due to the physical barriers placed to fence them off, with the result of isolating them. Like satellites they are trapped within the main planets’ orbit but have lost the role of active elements. They are invisible, eclipsed for most of the time, but it is in their absence that their value can be appreciated. So it is in these satellite areas that you can find satellite people: a microcosm of parallel lives that orbit on well-defined routes, near enough to be part of the picture, while at the same time, estranged by distance. It is therefore not accidental that marginality is a common factor both for the people and places. Contrastingly, the feeling of solitude and uneasiness disappears on entering this parallel system. Each satellite brings with it a variety of its own peculiarities. The broken rings of the chain find a new position.
